Planning a trip to Walt Disney World Resort can feel overwhelming — especially if it’s your first visit. Between choosing the right resort, booking dining reservations, learning Lightning Lane strategies, and figuring out the best park plan, there’s a lot to organize. My first time planning a Disney World vacation felt overwhelming and caused a lot more stress than necessary. However, after learning the ropes I have found a really great system to help plan a magical family vacation that will be so memorable!
That’s why I created this step-by-step Disney World planning timeline to help you know exactly what to do — and when to do it.
Whether you're planning a family vacation, a couples getaway, or a multigenerational Disney trip, this guide walks you through the Disney planning process from 12 months out all the way to arrival day.

A Disney World vacation is one of the most magical trips you can take — but it’s also one of the most complicated vacations to plan. (Way more complicated than other vacation destinations)
The best resorts book early. Dining reservations disappear fast. Popular rides can have long wait times. Having a plan ahead of time can save you:
Money - its always cheaper to book WELL in advance
Stress - More time to plan and a clear, organized plan (Who else is type A - or at least trying to be?!)
Time waiting in lines
Missed reservations
Poor park strategy decisions
If you’re feeling overwhelmed already, don’t worry — that’s exactly what I help families with every day through my FREE Disney vacation planning services. Don't want any of the stress but all of the fun? I'm here to help!! I have traveled to Disney countless times (over 30) and have traveled with all ages. I have been planning successful family Disney vacations since 2021 and love helping others plan their dream vacation!
1. Choose Your Travel Dates
The very first step is deciding when to visit Disney World and honestly one of the most important steps.
Some times of year are better for:
Lower crowds
Cooler weather
Holiday events
Lower prices
Festivals
If you’re unsure when to go, check out my related guide:
There is no wrong to time to visit Disney and every family's priorities when planning a vacation is different - some don't want to pull kids out of school - others want the cheapest time of year no matter what. Decide what time frame is best for you and then play around with dates in that time frame to determine the best time to travel.
2. Set Your Disney Budget
Before booking anything, determine:
Hotel budget
Ticket budget
Food budget
Souvenir budget
Transportation costs
Lightning Lane budget
You can also decide whether:
Staying on property is worth it
You want Park Hopper tickets
You’ll purchase the Disney Dining Plan

Once you set a budget try to stick to it! It is so easy to keep adding to your vacation and end up going way over budget. Don't forget about food/souvenir costs that can add up while you are on vacation. I have created a budget tool to help plan this portion of your vacation. Check it out here!
3. Decide Where to Stay
One of the biggest Disney planning decisions is choosing the right resort.
Disney resorts fall into three categories:
Value Resorts
Moderate Resorts
Deluxe Resorts
Each resort category and individual resort offers both pros and cons. Deciding which resort

Once dates are selected, it’s time to officially book. The earlier you book... the better! I even suggest to my clients that they fill out the quote request form as soon as they even are thinking about planning a vacation (even if those dates are not available for booking with Disney). This allows me and you to get the best price as soon as those dates drop. You only need a small deposit once the dates open and I can always apply promotions to your vacation after the fact to help you save money!
This includes:

Theme park tickets
